On what positioning is for
I spent twenty-five years inside the brand teams of some of the world's most demanding luxury houses. One lesson held everywhere: people buy the story, told by someone who believes it, long before they care about the features.
I've led brand work at Treasury Wine Estates, Diageo and Mark Anthony Group, on Penfolds, 19 Crimes, Beaulieu Vineyard, Mission Hill, Cîroc and Captain Morgan. I've repositioned icons, launched insurgents, and built the systems that keep brand work alive past the next quarter.
I'm a brand strategist and advisor. Sometimes that looks like a positioning workshop, sometimes a strategy engagement, and sometimes an embedded fractional CMO seat when the brand needs a leader in the building. Whatever the shape, I don't hand off a deck and leave. The work has to get to market.
The motto on this site, Esse Quam Videri, comes from the Ford family crest. It means to be, rather than to seem, and it's the standard I hold the work to. The greyhound you'll see on every page is the same crest, drawn in a single line of ink.
Every brand is going to use AI. What matters is where, how, and whose judgment it answers to. Delegate what doesn't define the brand, to advance the work that does.
Taste, authorship, symbolic meaning, narrative and feeling are what make work recognizably yours, and that work stays human. If a piece could run under anyone's logo, it isn't carrying yours.
The house's taste gets written down as tone rules, a visual lexicon and cultural red lines. AI-touched work clears that bar or it doesn't go out.
When AI absorbs the work about work, people get their days back for the craft they were hired for.
I take a small number of engagements at a time. Tell me what you're trying to build and I'll tell you whether I'm the right person for it.
